Above: volunteer Dr. Danni Gitsham wraps up ADI's first year working in New Ireland Province thanks to sponsorship from Roche Australia more
AUSTRALIAN DOCTORS INTERNATIONAL (ADI) is a not-for-profit, non-government health care and development aid organisation working in remote and rural regions of Papua New Guinea (PNG). We are a registered charity, approved by AusAID and a signatory to ACFID’s Code of Conduct.
PNG is in desperate need: it has the poorest state of health in the Pacific region and ranks lower than Bangladesh and Kenya on the UN Human Development Index. Local doctors are scarce and rural health services are run-down, with staff in urgent need of training and medical resources.
ADI's goal is to improve the health of people in PNG. We specialise in Integrated Health Patrols, deploying volunteer doctors and health managers to work in partnership with local local church and government health providers to provide:
1. Medical treatment to save lives and reduce suffering;
2. School and community health education to help locals protect themselves against illness and disease;
3. Training for local health workers to help strengthen the delivery of primary health services.
ADI services rural and remote areas of New Ireland Province and Western Province. Travelling by boat, plane, helicopter and foot, our volunteers reach some of the most challenging and inaccessible places in the world (let alone in PNG!).
New Ireland Province has just 7 local doctors for 160,000 people on remote islands separated by rough seas. Western Province has 14 local doctors for 212,000 people spread over mountainous jungle. Communicable diseases are commonplace. Curable diseases go untreated. Many women give birth in the bush. Link to health in PNG.
ADI does not believe in band-aid solutions. By working in collaboration with local health providers to strengthen their clinical and management skills, we aim for sustainable change. Learn about ADI's key partners in PNG.
