As a core component of ADI's program, volunteer doctors provide education and training to help build the capacity of local health workers, as well as to help improve general health and knowledge amongst the community.

Training - our volunteer doctors support, advise, encourage and share information with community health workers, nurses and hospital workers to improve their working environment, medical knowledge, morale and influence within their communities.

They also introduce and facilitate workshops and other teaching programs on agreed health topics in consultation with the Catholic Health Office and the District Health Office.

Read about ADI's 2009 in-service health training here.

Education - our volunteer doctors provide education to local communities on basic health and hygiene.

This includes health talks for school students on topics such as:

  • how to stay healthy
  • puberty and sexual health
  • infections
  • basic hygiene
  • immunisations
  • filariasis and the importance of MDA

Our volunteer doctors write about their experiences in PNG via medical notes, journal entries and letters home. Read about tropical diseases and unique pathology, jungle treks and remote villages, and new friends and cultural encounters. Link to doctors' patrol reports here
