LEVEL O COACHING COURSE

Norths is extending its junior development support by sponsoring a Basketball NSW Level 0 introductory coaching course for all our volunteer junior and miniball coaches and parents to help develop their coaching skills.

In excess of 250 teams currently participate in North’s Junior and Miniball programmes and a cornerstone of our strategy for player development is to increase the skills base of our volunteer coaches and to also broaden the number of appropriately qualified people in our association.

The Level 0 course is the first step on the National Coaching Accreditation Scheme, (NCAS) ladder.

The course comprises a 4 hour session, (25% theory & 75% on court) and a nominal $ 5.00 fee will be charged payable when you reserve your place online.

This programme will cover the fundamentals of the game, philosophy behind coaching children, adult interaction with children in a sporting context and North’s specific competition formats.

The number of people in each course will be limited to 20 and Norths will schedule sufficient courses to cater for the demand.

Following this course parents will be better able to communicate the basic rules and terminology amongst other adults on their team, have a clearer understanding of the game, coaching techniques and terminology.

People who complete the course and express interest in pursuing their development as a coach can be fast tracked with North’s mentor coaches to facilitate a NCAS Level 1 coaching accreditation by midyear.

Improved coaching skills equates to improved player skills which makes participation more interesting and competitive and develops a stronger talent pool.

The North’s Alumni coaches who have volunteered their time and expertise to this programme have many years experience of successfully coaching children and are qualified and accredited by BNSW to present these courses.

The course will be conducted by NSBA member Michael Stokes. Michael is a former New Zealand Tall Black and NBL player who has been a member at Norths since 1984 and is a qualified referee, score table official and currently plays in the NSBA local and veteran’s representative competitions.

After coaching senior men in NZ, he began coaching Norths Junior Representative in 2001 and is currently the head coach of the Under 18 Women Division One team. Michael has also coached NSW State Metro Junior Teams as well as working at various Basketball NSW player development camps. Michael is NCAS Level 1 qualified and is currently working towards his Level 2 accreditation.

YOUR CALL REF!

A4 has the ball at his disposal out-of-bounds for a throw-in, when a fighting situation occurs with members of both teams being disqualified. Shall play resume with an alternating possession throw-in?

NO! The rules state that if "a team had control of the ball or was entitled to the ball, the ball shall be awarded to this team for a throw-in at the centre line extended, opposite the scorer’s table."

The game ends with the score TEAM A 80, TEAM B 79. Before the referee has signed the scoresheet it is realised that a field goal scored by TEAM B with 20 seconds left in the match has been erroneously credited to TEAM A. Does the referee have the authority to correct the error and change the final score?
